The FPDA countries - Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and the UK - conducted Exercise Bersama Shield 2011 during May 2-13 which challenged them to jointly plan and execute tactical missions for 46 combat aircraft and nine warships. Over the past 11 days FPDA warships and a diverse range of combat aircraft have engaged in complex air defence exercises. The tactical missions involved the integration of different aircraft types which was coordinated by 130 FPDA personnel at Butterworth Air Base in Malaysia. The exercise was beneficial for Australia's new F/A-18F Super Hornets, and the RAN guided missile frigates, HMA Ships Ballarat and Parramatta. The Super Hornets, from 1 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland, trained alongside Malaysian MiG-29 interceptors and Singaporean F-16s to help the combined maritime task group conduct highly realistic air defence exercises. The Commanding Officer of 1 Squadron, Wing Commander Glen Braz, said the Australian Super Hornets have practiced air combat tactics that enhanced the Air Force's experience of air combat with regional defence forces. "This type of training is especially beneficial for our aircrew to be exposed to a highly complex and multi-national environment that aids in developing their air combat skills and experience," he said. Commander Australian Contingent, Wing Commander Ken Robinson, said the annual exercise provides the ADF with the opportunity to develop relationships with important security partners while reinforcing Australia's long-term commitment to regional stability. "The ADF participated in the exercise, which marks its 40th anniversary this year," he said. The exercise included a multi-national sports day on Tioman Island, in the South China Sea, where the crews of Parramatta and Ballarat competed in friendly games of sport against their counter-parts from the Royal Navy, the Republic of Singapore Navy, the New Zealand Navy and the Malaysian Navy. HMAS Ballarat will now look forward to supporting the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX) to be held in Singapore and Exercise AUSTHAI 2011. HMAS Parramatta will be conducting a port visit to Cambodia. The two ANZAC Class ships will then sail to Thailand to participate in Exercise AUSTHAI 11, a combined biennial exercise between the Royal Thai Navy and the RAN, which aims to improve interoperability and enhance proficiency in maritime war-fighting skills. English/Nat Malaysia's Defence Minister has said that big arms purchases in Southeast Asia should not be looked upon as an arms race As a region with one of the highest economic growth rates in the world, it was only at times like this nations could replace old weapons with new, he said. But he said arms manufacturers who want to make sales to developing countries have to be prepared to transfer technology. Syed Hamid made his comments at the opening of the fifth annual Defence Services Asia arms show. The exhibition has attracted more than 600 defence manufacturers from 43 nations. The Cold War may be over but defence spending in Asia is still growing. And arms manufacturers the world over have come to Kuala Lumpur in a bid to gain vital orders as the West cuts back on defence spending. Defence Services Asia is held every two years. The show has doubled in size since the last exhibition in 1994 and military personnel from all over Asia come to shop for the latest weaponry. The booming tiger economies of countries like Malaysia, which has a growth rate of more than eight per cent, means they have the money to update ageing weaponry with the latest technology. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Undoubtedly the current economic growth enjoyed by us provided us the best opportunity to modernise our armed forces. The D S A 96 will thus be another avenue for us to assess and review on the latest defence status of the army." SUPER CAPTION: Syed Hamid Albar, Malaysian Defence Minister The annual defence budget for the seven member Association of Southeast Asian Nations now runs at nearly nine (b) billion dollars (U-S), according to the organisers of the show. Malaysia alone plans to spend two billion (b) dollars on modernising its conventional defence forces. It's a market foreign manufacturers are keen to cash in on. The UK has the biggest presence at the show with more than 80 companies represented. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The Pacific Rim and Malaysia itself are very important markets for the United Kingdom they're major area of growth for defence exports and we have long historical associations with this part of the world in any event and therefore we are keen to be here with a wide range of products." SUPER CAPTION: Brian Lowe, UK Defence Manufacturers Association This German company has been making combat knives and bayonets since the 14th Century - the world leader in the highly specialised field of military knives. With less hand-to-hand combat these days, knives have become multi-purpose tools. This knife doubles as a wire-cutter with built-in screwdriver and torch, as well as having a very sharp edge. South Africa is making is debut at the show. And it occupies more floor-space than any other exhibitor. The Denel group is more than willing to enter into joint ventures with Asian countries and hand over technology know-how. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It's not easy to do business if you've got an embargo against you and so they way the world has opened to us I think has really given us the opportunity to do be players in this part of the world and in the rest of the world. And we are really glad that we are, we can play in this part of the world and that we are received so well." SUPER CAPTION: Johan Alberts, Chief Executive Officer Denel Group In a region which has recently seen tension between China and Taiwan, as well as cross border skirmishes between North and South Korea, defence and security is an important issue for governments. Asian countries are using their new-found wealth to upgrade their armed forces, replacing old technology with new.
